Shanghai for the Skyline

Shanghai a busy, vibrant and westener city that might just not cut it because of the smog, noise, scams and unfriendly people. I did like Shanghai otherwise I would have not stayed for a week there. When I arrived at the Rock and Wood Hostel I bumped into the Israeli guy again, which I have met in Taishan. We agreed to go for some food and I wanted to see the skyline by night. The only reason really why I came to Shanghai was the skyline by night as seen on so many pictures. Indeed it was stunning and there are uncountable tall buildings over in Pudong district. The Pearl TV Tower is probably the most famous one of them. We took some pictures and walked along the Bund, which is known for European and Kommunist style buildings and extravagant shops. On the way back to Zhongshan Park (nearest stop to Rock & Wood) a guy offered us Chinese girls for 200¥….

The Hostel was a great place to stay as there were many other westeners. We played some pool and guitar and had a good time. I thought some people how to play the Chinese Chess and in return some of the Chinese people at the hostel thought us how to play Mahjong. Once you know how to play the game is relatively simple – unlike Chess. It is similar to the card game Rummy.

We went to the art district and admired some of the graffiti outside on the walls. We wandered around the district and went into some galleries. I preferred the graffiti’s outside, of course we couldn’t tell this to the kind Chinese girl asking us about her gallery.

My trip London to Singapore by train would have not been complete without riding the Maglev. Todate also known as the fastest train in the world. It can go as fast as 431km/h and connect’s Shanghai with the Airport. It is pretty amazing to be on a train that fast, so I took a return ticket to experience the ride.

The train station above is actually the Shanghai Honqiao Station where the normal fast trains leave. The Maglev one does not look that impressive.
