Yangshuo – last stop in China

Yangshuo’s surrounding landscape is beautiful but the town is one big tourist trap. When I arrived I was shocked by how touristy it was. I spent the bus ride from Guilin to Yangshuo talking to a guy from Chile. He told me how in the guide book Yangshuo is described as a laid back town perfect to unwind and enjoy the quiet place. So we weren’t expecting people running after us to sell their rooms and tours to us as soon as we got off the bus. We were happy that our hotels are outside of town in a small village. It is about 20mins walk from Yangshuo center.

After the initial surprise I looked up a few things to do in and around Yangshuo. Unfortunately most of the blogs I have came across wrote bad things about the place and didn’t recommend anything. Fortunately this did not proof to be true. The next day we rented a bicycle and drove outside of town along a small river. The scenery was indeed stunning and is the typical landscape if you think of China (and haven’t been anywhere else). At some point we came to a river crossing. We managed to avoid paying for the Bambooboats by taking a small muddy farmers path. This was probably the best part as we crossed several rice fields. Later we had some food in a small village and were lucky to be inside as it started to rain. We waited for the sky to clear up and proceeded to Moon Hill. Up there we had a nice view over the landscape.

On the way back to Yangshuo we passed a Dwarf Theme Park. Basically, dwarfs are performing different kind of shows and tricks to amuse the tourists. I am sure this is only possible (allowed) in China. Pretty weird.

Dwarves? Amuse? Poor people. Albeit I’m not sure whether this is allowed only in China, I wouldn’t have been much surprised if learned of something like this taking place in Russia. But the scenery is breathtaking nonetheless 😉
